CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Gambling Special Agents (Exempt)
Special Agents are duly sworn law enforcement officers. Although they
are exempt from civil service, they have many of the same benefits as
general service employees, including a generous insurance and leave
package. They also belong to PSERS, a new Public Safety Employees
Retirement System.
Most Special Agents are required to attend the Washington State Criminal
Justice Basic Law Enforcement Academy. They have a flexible work
schedule of 160 hours within 28-day work periods.
We employ Special Agents in the following divisions:
Licensing Operations – Agents in this division work at
our Headquarters in Lacey and are not required to attend the Basic Law
Enforcement Academy. Agents are assigned in the following area:
Investigations – Conducts pre-licensing financial investigations, financial reviews and source of funds investigations, criminal history investigations, post licensing investigations and charitable/nonprofit reviews and works in coordination with Tribal Gaming Agency licensing representatives.
Field Operations – Field agents in this division work in one of our three regional offices in Everett, Spokane, and Tacoma. Agents are assigned in one of the following areas:
Field Staff – Regulates
licensed gambling and provides technical assistance to gambling
operations, and works with numerous licensee groups and law enforcement
agencies. Investigates criminal cases for the prosecution of illegal
gambling activities and gambling related crimes.
Criminal Intelligence Unit – Collects,
evaluates, collates, analyzes, and disseminates information on illegal
gambling and other associated crimes. Responsible for computer forensic
investigations and investigations of illegal internet gambling sites.
Tribal and Technical Gambling – Agents in this division are based throughout the state and partner with Tribal representatives. Agents are assigned in the following area:
Tribal Gaming Unit – Works
cooperatively with each tribe’s Tribal Gaming Agency to monitor Class III
(Nevada/casino style) tribal gaming activities and ensure compact
compliance. Provides training to gambling regulators within the state and
across the country.
General Service Employment
Many of the Gambling Commission employees work in job classes that are not specific to the Gambling Commission. These include jobs such as office assistants, administrative assistants, fiscal analysts, and information technology specialists.
Washington Management Service
The Washington Management Service (WMS) is a personnel system designed specifically for management level positions in Washington State government. The Gambling Commission has a small number of WMS positions.
